US Men's Amateur team draws, loses in two matches versus Ireland

29 Sep, 2009

Five members of the reigning USASA Natioal Champion Aegean Hawks participated in a week-long training camp with the USASA National Amateur Select Team in San Francisco.

The team trained on Treasure Island, which was a U.S. Naval base up until 1996, and played two exhibition matches against the Republic of Ireland\'s National Amateur Team. The Yanks lost the first contest 1-0 off of an own-goal in the 81st minute and then came back to tie the Irish 0-0 in a heated contest on Saturday night in front of 500 fans at Kezar Stadium in downtown San Francisco.

Two members of the Arlington, VA based team - Michael Goldman (GWU) and Ricardo Valverde (VCU) - started and played all 90 minutes of both matches for the U.S. Fellow Aegean Hawks Watson Vaughan-Prather (Wisconsin), Edward Thurston (Brown) and Clayton Voss (William & Mary) featured in the matches as substitutes and earned praise from USASA National Team Coach Aleks Mihailovic.
