TSC Maryland Pride upend New York 2-0

7 Jun, 2009

TSC Maryland Pride midfielder Anabel Jimenez continued her assault on opposing goalkeepers on Saturday, netting her third goal in as many games in a 2-0 victory over the New York Athletic Club.

Jimenez scored in the 13th minute when midfielder Christy Bush found her inside the six yard box on a cross from the left side. New York AC goalkeeper Tyler Griffin got a piece of Jimenez's first attempt, but the ball stayed on the goal line and she tapped the ball in.

The goal set the tone for the rest of the game for the Pride (2-1-1), who thoroughly dominated New York (2-3-0) from start to finish, out-chancing their WPSL East opponent and out-shooting them 8-4.

Forward Lisa Zanti also scored for the Pride on a free kick.

Jimenez nearly struck again two minutes after scoring, when she caught Griffin a bit too far off her line. From about 20 yards out, Jimenez let a shot go, and Griffin had to fully extend to make the save.

New York almost evened the score in the 41st minute when Allyson Gordon collected a loose ball at the top of the Pride box and dribbled in at goalkeeper Bevin English. English, making her debut for TSC, was equal to the task, deflecting Gordon's point-blank attempt at the near post.

The chance would prove to be New York's only real threat of the game. English finished the game with four saves.

Griffin, who made six saves, did her best to keep New York in the game during first half stoppage time when Jimenez picked out forward Karyn Farrar on a low cross. Farrar's shot sent Griffin sprawling back to her left to make the save.

However, a handball by Griffin just outside the box would prove costly in the 50th minute. While the New York defense was still getting organized for the ensuing free kick, forward Zanti nailed a ball just under the crossbar, for her second goal of the season.
