Navy women put six on Academic Honor Roll

29 Jan, 2009

Six members of the Navy women\'s soccer team have been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Thursday.

The list of honorees features three members from the Class of 2009, including two-time First-Team Academic All-American Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.), Kristen Laraway (Long Valley, N.J.) and CiAnna Weikle (Lakeville, Minn.). A trio of juniors in 2008 Patriot League Defender of the Year Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio), goalkeeper Beth Reed (Carmel, Ind.) and forward Brittany White (Carmel, Ind.) round out the Navy contingent.

Over her four-year playing career, Barnes, the 2008 Patriot League Goalkeeper and Women\'s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, has firmly established herself as one of the nation\'s premier student-athletes. A double major in computer science and information technology, she has recorded a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in four consecutive semesters and ranks 22nd in overall order of merit amongst the 1,074 members in the Class of 2009.

The New Orleans native put the finishing touches on an already decorated career this fall by joining former Navy standout Nicole Aunapu (Class of \'98) as the second women\'s soccer player ever to earn First-Team Academic All-America honors twice during her career.

On the playing field, after posting eight shutouts and a league-best 0.65 goals-against average, she was recognized as the conference\'s top keeper and as a first-team all star for the second time in her three years as a starter.

Barnes, one of five student-athletes to earn a spot on the Lowe\'s Senior All-America First-Team, walks away from the program as its all-time leader in goals-against average, shutouts and career wins. Following May\'s commencement, she will pursue a career as a Surface Warfare Officer/Information Professional (SWO/IP).

Laraway, an international relations major, earns a spot on the league honor roll nod for a second consecutive season after posting a 3.40 GPA during the fall semester. In 2008, the New Jersey native had a breakout season on the offensive end, which saw her receive all-league recognition (second-team) for the first time in her four-year career.

One of eight Mids who set career-best point totals, she paced the Patriot League\'s highest scoring offense with 17 points and a career-high six goals. Earlier this season, Laraway became just the eighth Navy player to be named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week on the strength of a career-best two goal effort against Vermont.

When she graduates this May, she will begin pursuing a career as a surface warfare officer. Before then, however, Laraway, along with senior teammate Jenn Dunbar (Crofton, Md.), will hope to maintain a competitive fire which brought such great success on the soccer field, when they suit up this spring as members of the Academy\'s women\'s lacrosse team.

Weikle, a three-time honor roll awardee, posted a 3.81 GPA this fall and owns a 3.22 cumulative average while majoring in applied mathematics. On the field, she provided a consistent and dependable presence for Navy as a two-year starter in the midfield.

A defensive-minded player, Weikle also enjoyed a career season on the offensive end in 2008, with three goals, including one of just eight allowed by NCAA Final Four participant Stanford.  The 5-foot-4 midfielder also registered career-high totals in assists (4) and points (10). Following May\'s commencement, she will begin supply corps school to continue her naval career.

Reed, a three-time honor roll recipient, was one of two Midshipmen honorees (both goalkeepers) who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall. A standout in the classroom, the mechanical engineering major has now recorded a 4.0 in each of her five semesters at the Academy.

This fall, Reed gained valuable experience as she prepares to move into a starting role in 2009, appearing in nine games, making two starts and posting four victories with one shutout.  She turned away 88.2 percent of the shots she faced and concluded the year with a 0.47 GAA.

Like many of her teammates, Shelly Moeller has replicated her athletic successes inside the classroom. Moeller, the 2008 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and a Second-Team NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic selection, posted a 3.72 GPA this past fall as an oceanography major.

The 5-foot-10 lynchpin led the defensive charge for a squad which allowed only 14 goals in 22 games, shutout a league-high 13 opponents and posted the 12th-lowest goals-against average (0.60 GAA) in the country.

Moeller, who has started 69-straight games since joining the team as a freshman, remained true to her roots as a threat on the offensive end as well, as she ranked fourth on the team with four goals, including three game-winners.

After recording a 3.47 GPA this fall while majoring in economics, Brittany White earns her first career league academic honor. White played in all 22 games and enjoyed a standout season, equaling her previous career-high point total of 13 with five goals and three assists. Her 13 points and five goals each ranked as the third-highest total son the team.

The Indiana native ranks in the top six percent of her class in military order of merit and has been named to the Commandant\'s List in each of the last three semesters.

With a 15-4-3 overall mark, Navy eclipsed the double-digit mark in victories and registered a winning season for a 14th consecutive year en route to capturing its seventh regular-season league title and posting a 75.0 winning percentage – the fifth best clip in program history.

To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the Patriot League\'s seven fall championship sports. The criteria for awarding varsity letters are different at each member institution.
