Six Mids earn Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades
28 Jan, 2009Six players off last year’s Navy men’s soccer team have been named to the Patriot League Men’s Soccer Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced this week. To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the Patriot League’s seven fall championship sports. The criteria for awarding varsity letters are different at each institution.
Leading the Navy contingent was sophomore forward Mike Porcelli (West Islip, N.Y.). Porcelli sported a 3.27 GPA in economics, while leading the team in scoring this year with eight points and four goals. He tallied four of Navy’s 11 goals this season, and scored Navy’s last three goals of the year.
Junior midfielder Chris Marino (Longwood, Fla.) was honored for the third time after recording a 3.63 GPA in ocean engineering. Marino ranked second on the team in scoring with five points on two goals and one assist.
Junior defenseman Matt Tapajcik (Alexandria, Va.) garnered his first academic honor with a 3.39 GPA in oceanography. Tapajcik ranked second on the team with two assists.
Freshman Sam Miller (Tulsa, Okla.) was named to the team after sustaining a 3.88 GPA in his first semester on the Yard. The Patriot League Rookie of the Week recipient on Sept. 15, Miller scored an overtime game-winning goal against Saint Joseph’s for his only points of the year.
Sophomore Chris Anderson (Fort Worth, Texas) was named to the team for the first team after recording a 3.33 GPA in economics. Anderson played in all 18 games with two starts. He recorded eight shots on the season.
Junior Tyler Bristol (Clinton, Conn.) was selected to the squad after achieving a 3.28 GPA in mechanical engineering. Navy’s back-up goalkeeper, Bristol recorded a 1.35 GAA with an .850 save percentage and a 1-1-0 record in five games. He started against Lipscomb, helping Navy to a 3-2 overtime victory.
Navy finished last year with a 4-11-3 record, but will return 16 letterwinners for new head coach Dave Brandt.
