Majestic Ashley Banks named to W-League Team of Week

23 Jul, 2008

United Soccer Leagues announced Wednesday the W-League Team of the Week for the final week of the USL regular season, honoring the top players for their performance in the prior seven days of play.  Northern Virginia Majestic Ashley Banks was named to the eleven-member team for her outstanding play in helping the Majestics earn a 4-0 road victory over the New York Magic.

On Saturday night, the Northern Virginia Majestics found themselves facing off against the New York Magic, a team the narrowly edged six days prior.  The Majestics found their rhythm early and often, beginning in the 8th minute of play when midfielder Jessie Deegan lined up a free kick from the right side of the New York third.  Deegan’s kick floated deep into the box and was struck solidly on the volley from charging Majestic forward Ashley Banks.  Banks shot whistled past the Magic keeper for her second goal of the year.

In the second half, Banks earned her first assist by hurling a 40-yard monster throw-in from just over midfield that soared over the entire New York defense to midfielder Deegan, completely alone on the far side.  Deegan cruised in to the Magic penalty area and calmly pushed the ball untouched into the net.

Banks nabbed her second assist of the night, launching a Majestic corner kick into the penalty box, leading to the short range shot into the goal by Northern Virginia defender Mary Casey.

Banks is the fourth Majestic to earn Team of the Week honors in 2008.  Goalkeeper Kate Milstead was named Player of the Week in week nine while Mary Casey and Kelly Hammond both garnered Team of the Week honors in week thirteen.

The Northern Virginia Majestics will return to United Soccer Leagues action in Prince William County next summer, as construction will be completed on their turf field stadium at Hellwig Memorial Park. The 2009 season schedule will be released in late winter/early spring.
