Virginia v Maryland (D)
Majestics fall to Jersey Sky Blue 1-0
22 Jun, 2008Taylor Walsh headed in a long free kick from Bonnie Young early in the second half as Jersey Sky Blue slipped past the Northern Virginia Majestics 1-0 in a W-League Northeast Division match at Washington-Lee High School. Despite several close chances in the final moments of the game, the Majestics were unable to find the Sky Blue net and fell to 1-4-3.
Northern Virginia found themselves under pressure early as Jersey’s offensive surged forward in the opening minutes of the match. Majestic keeper Kate Milstead was forced to make a diving save in the 3rd minute, just touching a Gina Demaio free kick wide of the goal.
The Majestics crept back into the game, increasing their own offensive pressure as the first half wore on. Northern Virginia’s best opportunity of the half came in the 34th minute when Nataly Arias fired a free kick at the left corner of the Sky Blue goal, forcing keeper Jillian Loyden to deflect it just wide of the post.
The game-winning goal came to Sky Blue four minutes into the second half as Young’s cross glanced off Walsh’s head and rolled into the back left corner of the Northern Virginia net.
The Majestics and Sky Blue continued to battle back and forth throughout the half, with each side creating close chances on goal. As the match neared completion and stormy weather moved into the area, the Majestics pushed forward in an attempt to equalize. With Sky Blue backed up to protect their narrow lead, Kika Toulouse just missed the tying goal in the 87th minute as her touch sailed wide of the Jersey goal.
Northern Virginia returns home next week on Saturday, June 28th, to face local rival Fredericksburg Lady Gunners at Washington Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia. Match time is set for 5:00PM. Immediate after the match, the Northern Virginia Royals take on the Reading Rage in the second game of the doubleheader.
