Nebraska tops Loyola women 2-0 in Husker Classic finale
29 Aug, 2010The University of Nebraska scored a goal in each half, and the host Huskers defeated Loyola University Maryland, 2-0, in the finale of the Adidas Husker Classic on Sunday morning.
Morgan Marlborough put the Huskers (2-1-0 overall) on the board in the 25th minute on a free kick just outside of the Loyola 18-yard box.
“We did not set our wall properly on the free kick that they scored on, which is disappointing, but it is something we can fix,” Loyola Head Coach Katherine Remy Vettori said. “I was pleased with our effort until the end of the game. We got some corner kicks and multiple shots in the second half.”
The teams played to a scoreless for nearly 50 minutes before Nebraska broke through for its second goal. Marlborough hit a hard shot near the end of the 72nd minute that Danielle Ippolito made a save on for Loyola (1-2-1).
The rebound, however, deflected to Molly Thomas who knocked it in for a goal and the final difference.
Nebraska took 23 shots in the game to the Greyhounds’ six. Ippolito made a season-high nine saves in goal, while Tara MacDonald had four for the Huskers.
