Creighton rallies to beat Loyola women, 2-1, Adidas Husker Classic

27 Aug, 2010

Gianna Mangione scored less than eight minutes into the game, but Creighton University rallied to defeat Loyola University Maryland, 2-1, on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Adidas Husker Classic.

Mangione put the Greyhounds (1-1-0 overall) on the board just 7:57 into the contest. She took a Nichole Schiro centering pass in the goalie box and scored her first goal of the season into the upper right corner of the net.

Loyola’s lead would be short-lived, however, as Creighton (1-1-1) would tie the score less than eight minutes later. Claire Zach clanged a shot off the cross bar, but she knocked in the rebound with a header at 15:52, knotting the score at 1-1.

The Blue Jays gained an advantage in the 34th minute on a Erin Gunther goal. Beth Fyles sent a pass to a waiting Gunther who scored from the right side of the goalie box at 33:14.

Creighton outshot the Greyhounds, 13-6, and the Blue Jays had a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Danielle Ippolito made four saves on six Creighton shots on goal for Loyola, while Alicia Montgomery made two saves for the Blue Jays
