Navy women's soccer beats George Mason in overtime, 1-0
29 Aug, 2010For the second time in three days, freshman Ashlynn Soellner headed in a game-winning corner kick from Katelyn George, giving Navy (2-1-1) a 1-0 overtime win over George Mason (1-1-0) in women\'s soccer action at George Mason Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the teams battling in a 0-0 game late in the first overtime period, Navy earned a corner kick in the 99th minute and George served a ball from the right side to Soellner, who was waiting in the box and headed the ball into the goal, giving Navy the sudden victory.
"We absorbed their best pressure throughout the game, and we had to get a little lucky," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "But our superior fitness and depth won out in the end."
Navy has now scored in the 85th minute or later in each of their four games this season.
George Mason came out firing in the first half, registering six shots in the first 20 minutes of play. Navy\'s Alexes Lopez-Shaw was solid in the net, making four saves while also breaking up a number of well-directed crosses.
George Mason\'s Omolyn Davis, an all-region player in 2009, was very active in the first half, taking four shots, with two being on goal. Navy center backs Kelsey Learned and Katie Kelly each put forth strong efforts in slowing Davis and limiting her chances over the first 45 minutes and throughout the entire game. Davis ended up with eight shots in the game.
Navy\'s first scoring chance came in the eighth minute, as midfielder Anastasia Abid made a nice individual to break free from the defense and sent a cross to Brittany Fruin, whose shot sailed over the net.
Navy had another scoring opportunity in the 31st minute on a corner kick taken by George. The defender, who has been excellent on set pieces this season, put a ball into the box, but no Mid could put a head on the ball as it sailed through the box and out of bounds.
George Mason outshot Navy in the first half 7-2, while also taking three corner kicks, compared to two for Navy.
Navy was much more active on offense in the second half and the Mids began the perioud with a near-goal from Amanda Serfass. The junior ripped a shot on net from 30 feet out that was directly on target, but banged off the crossbar.
Later in the second, Christine Calderon made a break towards goal and drew two defenders toward her before making a pass to a wide-open Carissa Youker. As Youker was setting up her shot, a George Mason defender returned to the play and broke up the attempt.
Two minutes later Navy earned a corner kick and the ball was sent to freshman Morgan Tilley, who fired on net from 20 yards out but the ball bounced off the cross bar.
Freshman Sam Newhaller had a solid scoring opportunity in the 73rd minute but her shot went just wide and into the netting on the outside of the goal.
George Mason made a frantic rush on goal in the 77th minute. Hannah Legler first made a save on a Patriot shot, seconds later Davis ripped a shot off the post and then a few seconds later, George Mason put a ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed for George Mason being offside.
Navy earned a free kick in the 83rd minute from just outside the box, but a shot from George went just over the net.
George Mason outshot Navy in the second half 8-4.
Play was balanced in the overtime period until Navy earned the corner kick and George\'s serve to Soellner ended the game.
Navy will next play at Texas on Friday evening.
