W&M women tie Connecticut 0-0 in Penn State Invitational
27 Aug, 2010The William and Mary Tribe women’s soccer team battled the Univeristy of Connecticut Huskies to a 0-0 draw on Friday night in the first match of the Penn State Invitational. With the tie, the Tribe moves its record to 1-0-1 on the season, while UConn moves to 0-1-1.
In a defensive match, the Tribe was led by sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Yount, who recorded her second-straight shutout. Yount made a career-high five saves on the night.
In a defensive first half, the Tribe had two nice looks on goal. In the 10th minute, sophomore Cortlyn Bristol fired off a shot, only to see the UConn goalie make the save. In the 18th minute, freshman Dani Rutter cracked a shot from just inside the box, but the effort was once again saved.
At the half, the Huskies had out-shot the College, 4-3, but UConn was only able to get on of those shots on-frame. Connecticut was able to get two corner kick opportunities in the first 45 minutes, while the College had one.
In the 52nd minute, the Tribe was on the attack, looking for the break through. Barry fired a shot wide from the right side, only to see Bristol corral it for the College. Bristol took a shot of her own, blasting a shot towards goal that was saved by a Husky on the goal line.
For the remainder of the second half, the match would go back and forth. Both teams would have opportunities, but neither would be able to get a score on the board in regulation. After 90 full, the match would head to overtime, tied at 0-0.
In the first overtime, the defensive battle continued, with both teams combining to take just one shot in the extra frame. The match headed into the second overtime still scoreless, 0-0.
In the second overtime, the Tribe withstood a furious offensive attack from the Huskies. UConn would fire off three shots in the final 10 minutes, but none would find the back of the net.
On offense, Bristol led the College with two shots on-goal, while freshman Dani Rutter had the other shot on-frame for the Green and Gold. For the match, the Huskies out-shot the College, 16-10.
