Soellner's late goal lifts Navy women to 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary's in home opener
27 Aug, 2010Freshman Ashlynn Soellner (Holidaysburg, Pa.) headed in a corner kick in the 85th minute to give Navy (1-1-1) a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary\'s (0-1-0) in women\'s soccer action on Friday night. It was Navy\'s 2010 home opener at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
With Navy having chances, but struggling to break through late in a 0-0 game, the Mids were able to muster back-to-back corner kicks with five minutes to play. On the second attempt, juniorKatelyn George served the ball in the air from the right side to an awaiting Soellner, who headed the ball into the net from five yards out. It was Soellner\'s first goal of her career and George\'s second assist in as many games.
"It was great that we kept having chance after chance and we kept pecking away at them," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "We didn\'t give up, we didn\'t hang our heads, we kept going after them and it took until the very end, but we finally got that goal and I think we are going to head uphill from here."
Navy outshot Mount St. Mary\'s 10-5 and had four shots on goal, compared to none by the Mount. Also, Navy had seven corner kicks in the game and only allowed one to Mount St. Mary\'s.
"We\'re earning set pieces and we\'re doing well in them and I think we can score more goals and convert more from some of those chances," Gabarra said.
Freshman goalkeeper Alexes Lopez-Shaw earned the win while playing the second half for Navy. Although she wasn\'t required to make any saves, she did have two impressive plays. Lopez-Shaw came out of the net and broke up a nice cross by leaping in the air in the 57th minute. In the 80th minute, it appeared Mount St. Mary\'s had a breakaway, but the attacker let the ball play too far in front of her and Lopez-Shaw dove at the ball to break up the opportunity.
Notes:
* Navy improves to 41-5-4 at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility since the beginning of the 2006 season.
* George was on the other end of a late-game goal coming from a header off of a corner kick on Sunday, when she knocked in the game-tying goal in the 87th minute in a 2-2 tie with Presbyterian.
