No. 7 Cavalier women blanks Colgate 6-0
22 Aug, 2010The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team continued its strong start to the 2010 season, cruising to a 6-0 victory over Colgate Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers outshot the Raiders 30-0 in the contest, as they improved to 2-0-0 on the season.
“We thought this would be a tough early game for our team,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “They were rested, as this was their opener, and we were coming off a game on Friday night. I thought we responded well and did a good job of being patient and spreading them out. In the second half, we were even sharper and set up some nice goals.”
The Cavaliers took the lead in the 16th minute when Meghan Lenczyk’s (McLean, Va.) blast from near the top of the box found the back of the net. The lead was doubled in the 38th minute when Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) curled a 25-yard shot just inside the far post, the first career goal for the sophomore midfielder. Virginia took that 2-0 edge into halftime against the preseason pick to win the Patriot League.
Early in the second half, the Cavaliers made the score 3-0 when Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.) intercepted a ball in the midfield, dribbled through several defenders to the top of the box before placing a shot inside the far post. Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.) made the score 4-0 as she one-timed in a cross from Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.) in the 66th minute. Lenczyk scored her second goal of the game and fourth of the season in the 71st minute, off an assist from Farrelly. Lindsey Miller (Nashua, N.H.) closed out the scoring in the 74th minute, placing a 20-yard shot into the upper corner of the net.
In addition to outshooting the Raiders 30-0, the Cavaliers had a 13-0 corner kick advantage. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) didn’t need to make a save to record her second shutout of the season, the 25th of her career. Ashley Walsh made 11 saves for Colgate.
