American University women fall 3-0 at #15 Virginia Tech

23 Aug, 2010

The American University women’s soccer team traveled to Blacksburg, Va., on Monday afternoon, and came up on the short end of a 3-0 decision to the 15th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies.

Virginia Tech (2-0) applied pressure on American (0-2) from the outset, earning six corner kicks in the first 7:22, although AU held the Hokies off the scoreboard on each chance. Virginia Tech eventually converted on a strike from Kelly Conheeney in the 12th minute to take a 1-0 advantage.

Virginia Tech knocked home its second goal off the foot of Jennifer Harvey, which came on a penalty kick in the 29th minute. American held the Hokies off the scoreboard for the next 50-plus minutes, remaining within striking distance deep into the second half. Virginia Tech’s Conheeney, however, added her second goal of the contest in the 83rd minute to erase any comeback chances for AU, setting the final margin at 3-0.

Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Farthing matched her career-best with 11 saves for the Eagles.

"Nobody likes to lose and we\'re disapponinted in the result, but we played much better today than we did the first time out against Georgetown," said Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "For us, it\'s about getting better every game. I think we made strides today against a very good, nationally-ranked Virginia Tech team."
