Lady Hoyas score five goals in seven minutes in 9-0 American drubbing

An American University women\'s soccer record crowd of 1,511 fans came out to Reeves Field on Saturday afternoon for the season opener, but the hometown support was not enough to keep the Eagles close to Georgetown. The Hoyas pulled away late in the first half with a flurry of goals en route to a 9-0 victory.

American (0-1) held Georgetown (1-0) off the scoreboard for the first 15 minutes of action before a Camille Trujillo goal gave the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles remained tough over the next 13 minutes until Georgetown went on a five-goal roll over a seven-plus minute stretch to put the game out of reach.
The streak began with a Catherine Cabot strike in the 29th minute, and was followed by goals from Kaitlin Brenn, Ingrid Wells and two from Alexa St. Martin.

After taking a 6-0 lead into intermission, Georgetown kept the pressure on in the second half with three goals in the first 20 minutes. Wells added her second of the game in the 59th minute, and was followed by scores off the feet of Colleen Dinn and Trujillo. American held Georgetown off the scoreboard for the final 25 minutes, setting the final margin at 9-0 in favor of the Hoyas.

"I thought we played well in the first 20 to 25 minutes but after we let in that first goal, we fell apart," commented Head Coach David Bucciero. "Georgetown is a very talented team. We didn\'t compete with the passion, energy and commitment necessary to play competitively with a team like Georgetown, and we paid the price."

Saturday\'s game marked the first game of the 2010-11 Phil Bender World Tour, as a women\'s soccer record-crowd of 1,511 took in the action. The attendance topped the previous women\'s soccer record by more than 300, which also occurred against Georgetown when 1,152 spectators turned out to Reeves Field on August 22, 2008.

Prior to the contest, AU students in attendance were treated to a tailgate featuring a barbeque (courtesy of Women\'s Initiative and AU Student Government), Robeks smoothies and Coca-Cola products.

The Eagles will look to rebound in their next contest on Monday, August 23 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
