D.C. United fan march for new stadium an impressive showing of unity

11 May, 2009

An impressive crowd turned out Saturday at Lincoln Park in Washington, DC to demonstrate and march in support of a new stadium for their team. An estimated one-thousand residents, fans, and team officials met at the park, then marched to the stadium to enjoy the pulsating 3-3 tie against visiting Toronto FC.

The most successful team in American soccer history has been playing at the out-dated, aging, and crumbling RFK Stadium on East Capitol Street for all of its fourteen years in existence. Team officials claim the team loses "millions" of dollars per year there due to high operating costs, and little ability to generate the additional revenues that a modern facility delivers.

The theme of the march seemed to be that local politicians need to keep their promises to the team, its owners, fans, and citizens in the communities where previous stadium deals promised major economic development, but were then killed when politicians who had previously stated support could not deliver, or changed their own minds.
