United's new signing, Guerrero, called up to Honduran team
6 Aug, 2008Newly acquired D.C. United midfielder/defender Ivan Guerrero has been called up to join the Honduras National Team to play a World Cup Qualifier game against Mexico in Mexico City on August 20. Guerrero will report to the National Team following D.C. United’s League match against the Chicago Fire on August 16.
After serving as the captain for the Under 23 National Team in 2000 when Honduras reached its first Olympic appearance, Guerrero has become a fixture on the National Team roster. During the qualifying stages for the 2002 World Cup, he led his team to the final round before falling to Mexico 3-0. Guerrero’s most recent call-up to join his National Team was in June of this year for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Puerto Rico. During his career, the 30-year-old midfielder/defender has represented his country in 79 matches.
D.C. United’s newest acquisition debuted for the Black-and-Red during the match against Kansas City on August 2, earning an assist. Guerrero was acquired on July 31 in a trade with the San Jose Earthquakes for partial allocation. Before joining United, Guerrero played 14 games (13 starts) for San Jose this season, scoring a goal. Guerrero was originally signed by the Chicago Fire in 2005, tallying two goals and five assists, and garnering Fire MVP, Fire Defender of the Year, and MLS All-Star honors in his first season. In 2006, he led the Fire in assists (nine) and helped lead his team to the playoffs. During the 2007 season, Guerrero notched one goal and two assists for Chicago.
