Kickers rout Bermuda for second win in three days

6 Jul, 2008

The Richmond Kickers capped off a six-game road stand with a 7-1 win over the Bermuda Hogges Sunday afternoon.  Forward David Bulow led the charge with a hat trick, while midfielders Mike Burke, Sascha Görres, Luke Vercollone and Leigh Cowlishaw each contributed to the final scoreline.  The Hogges prevented the shutout when forward Aljame Zuill converted a late penalty kick.

The Kickers took an early lead with a barrage of goals in a span of five minutes, beginning at the 31st minute mark.  Hogges midfielder Omar Shakir earned a foul after taking down Görres, allowing Burke to set up a free kick, 25 yards out.  Burke cracked at shot through the defense, glancing the upright on its way into the upper 90 to put the Kickers up 1-0.

Within the next minute, the Kickers doubled their lead when Vercollone fed the ball to Görres, who beat Hogges goalkeeper Timmy Figuerido from outside the box.  Soon after, Vercollone notched one on his own, tapping the ball into the net from four yards in the 34th minute, after Bulow eluded a defender in the box and slipped him the ball at the near post.

Bulow saw a left-footed strike ricochet off the crossbar early on, but the woodwork could not stop him from netting the next three goals, back-to-back.  First, in the 36th minute, he picked up a punt from goalkeeper Mark Murphy and placed the ball just under the crossbar.  He notched his second goal of the day during first half stoppage time, redirecting a header from defender Kelvin Jones to the near post.

The elusive forward did not wait long into the second half to record his hat trick when he extended the Kickers’ lead to 6-0 in the 50th minute.  Burke slid the ball through the defense to put Bulow behind the defense on a breakaway. He outpaced Shakir and dodged Figuerido who came off his line to challenge the play, and poked the ball past the diving ‘keeper.

The Hogges opened fire in the 63rd minute when last year’s USL-2 Rookie of the Year Stephen Astwood unleashed a determined shot that was saved by a leaping Murphy.  Zuill looked dangerous soon after but his header sailed just wide of the target.

Bermuda got a break in the 78th minute when Kickers defender Adam Chavez caused a foul inside the box.  Zuill calmly converted the resulting penalty kick to avoid the shutout.

Kickers midfielder Leigh Cowlishaw put the finishing touches on the final scoreline in the 87th minute.  Bulow chested the ball to an on-rushing Cowlishaw, who beat Figuerido from close range.

The Kickers return home on Saturday, July 12th to host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Gifts For Gulu Night.  Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm at the University of Richmond Stadium.  Bring your new and gently used clothing and sports equipment to benefit the children of Gulu, Northern Uganda and purchase $5.00 tickets at the gate.  Visit RichmondKickers.com for more information.
