Crystal Palace Baltimore down Richmond, remain undefeated
4 May, 2008Crystal Palace made it two wins in two games as they defeated last year’s USL2 regular season champions, Richmond by a score of 2-0.
Ronnie Pascale was the busier keeper as Palace took the game to Richmond, creating several good chances in the opening 10 minutes.
In the 19th minute, Palace right-back Andrew Marshall sent a long cross to an open Gary Brooks eight yards in front Brooks made no mistake, beating Ronnie Pascale with a well-placed header into the top left corner of the net.
Richmond found more of an attacking rhythm as the first half went on, but the Palace back-line kept them in check and the home side continued to look the more likely to find the net. But despite plenty of chances, the score remained 1-0 going into the break.
10 minutes into the second half, Richmond’s Wilfred Smith broke in on goal, but Kante and Nelson somehow managed to prevent the Kicker’s forward from leveling the score.
Richmond were starting to look tired as the second half continued and it came as no surprise when Palace doubled their lead on 65 minutes. Andrew Marshall’s long throw was headed on by Gary Brooks to Val Teixeira waiting at the far post. Teixeira calmly slotted the ball home from three yards out.
Palace didn’t sit back and only failed to make it three thanks to some excellent work by Ronnie Pascale in the Kicker’s goal.
With this result, Palace are now second to Charlotte in the league. Palace’s next match is at home on Saturday May 10th at 7:00pm against the winless Wilmington Hammerheads.
