Gomez assists win over D.C. United in Colorado
5 May, 2008Former D.C. United players Christian Gomez and Facundo Erpen got revenge on the club that traded them away by defeating D.C. United Sunday 2-0 in Colorado. Gomez, who was traded just this past season after United would not meet his salary demands, was reported to have been very bitter about the trade and out for revenge.
He made good on his plans with two brilliant assists on goals by Jacob Peterson and fellow ex-D.C. United Argentine Facundo Erpen. The first was a classic surging run right up the gut of the field by Gomez, complete with his trade mark 270-degree turn before clinically slotting a ball to an on-rushing Peterson who rewarded his playmaker with a world class first-time strike from 18 yards for his first MLS goal. The second assist was a "secondary" one by Gomez. After a flurry in the box he astutely latched on to a deflection from his initial cross attempt from the end line to drop the ball to Terry Cooke. Cooke took a calming touch before whipping a 12 yard cross right to Erpen's head. It wasn't the first header goal against United by the now veteran MLS player, but it was the first one he scored while wearing the other team's jersey.
United continue to struggle on the road, having yet to score a goal this season away from RFK in MLS play. Now the team returns to Washington with a shortened week of training before facing the red hot Chicago Fire on Thursday night for ESPN2's MLS game of the week.
