D.C. United unlucky not to advance despite defeating Pachuca

D.C. United's second-leg CONCACAF Champions' Cup semifinal against Pachuca of the Mexican league last night at RFK was full of action by the players involved, but will be noted for the inaction of the referee by United faithful and staff. United needed to win the game by at least two goals just to tie the series and force over time against their southern rivals, and they had plenty of chances. Despite controlling the game, United found itself far into the 2nd half when Fred was pulled down in the box for a clear penalty that was not called the referee. Not long after, Pachuca scored on a counter attack with 14 minutes remaining. Then United's luck changed as they quickly put two goals past a stunned Pachuca team hanging on for dear life, before cruelly running out of time as the referee ended the game for the 2nd half in a row prior to even allowing all stoppage time to expire.
