US Men's Soccer team jumps seven spots in World Rankings
9 Apr, 2008The United States Men's Soccer team jumped seven spots in the latest FIFA World Rankings to number 21 overall. The jump in total points was attributed mostly to the team's recent 3-0 defeat of Poland in late March. The ranking system uses a four-year rolling total of points accumulated for wins and draws, with different weightings applied based on the competition and time past since each match was played, among other minor aspects. The ranking is one of the highest for the US since just prior to the 2006 World Cup, where the Americans were ranked an amazing 4th overall. However, FIFA changed their ranking formula rather drastically after the last World Cup, which - combined with the team's poor performance in teh World Cup - caused the US team to slide all the way down to 31st.
