MLS makes Philadelphia home of sixteenth team

Though rumored for weeks as a “done deal”, Major League Soccer officially announced the city of Chester will be the league’s 16th team. They will begin play in 2010 in a brand new stadium, and already have a 1,600-member fan club driving season ticket sales a full 2-years before an opening kick. The team completes a major round of expansion for MLS, and will become the sixth new team added to the league since 2005. MLS has said it plans to cap teams in the league at 18, but has not said when the next two will be named. For D.C. area fans, the addition of a team to the Philadelphia market creates an instant rivalry, and the real possibility of sizable contingents of “away fans” attending games in each other’s stadium – a first for MLS.
