Gammage: Philadelphia will be the 16th MLS team

Jeff Gammage of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported yesterday that Major League Soccer has chosen Philadelphia as the next MLS expansion city, setting up a compelling geographical rivalry by inserting another team directly between United and New York. Gammage is reporting that MLS has tentatively set Feb. 28 as the date to announce the deal. A news conference is expected to be held in the city of Chester, where the team would play in an 18,500-seat stadium to be built beside the Delaware River. Philadelphia has been in the running for the 16th team along with St. Louis, and when Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell announced that the state would provide a key $47 million in funding for the stadium, things likely tilted their way for good.
