MISL's Norfolk SharX sign first player, local standout Brandon Massie

20 Oct, 2011

The Norfolk SharX Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) team has announced the team's first player signing for the 2011-12 season. Local standout Brandon Massie will join the team when it takes the field at Norfolk Scope Arena on November 11 in its inaugural match against the Syracuse Silver Knights.

Massie played soccer at Hickory High School. In 2006, during his senior year, he scored 34 goals, was named Southeastern District Player of the Year, First-Team All-Eastern Region and was selected First Team All-Tidewater. In 2005 and 2006, during Massie's tenure, Hickory went undefeated in District play.

Massie played his college soccer at Virginia Wesleyan College where he was a three-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Player of the Year, becoming not only the first three-time Player of the Year in any athletic program in the college's history, but also the first three-time honoree in soccer in ODAC history since the award was established in 1976. He was also a three-time Virginia College Division Player of the Year.

As a four-year starter at Virginia Wesleyan, Massie scored 57 goals and 30 assists, both Wesleyan and ODAC records. He helped lead Wesleyan to a 56-20-9 record and three consecutive years at the top of the ODAC regular season standings and three appearances in the ODAC championship game. Wesleyan won the 2008 conference title and earned four consecutive bids to the NCAA Division III national championship tournament. Massie graduated in 2010 with a degree in Criminal Justice and currently serves as an Assistant Soccer Coach at Wesleyan.

Brandon is the son of Kevin and Laura Massie and he will reside in Chesapeake with his parents and his four dogs, Chloe his Jack Russell mix, BG his lab/hound mix, Houdini his beagle and Ginger his boxer. The 5-11, 171 pound Massie, will turn 24 on October 27.

Massie signed with the United Soccer Leagues Pro League's Charleston Battery on April 7, 2010 after impressing the coaches at the Battery's invitational player trial in February. He made his professional debut on April 17, 2010 in a 3-2 win over the Charlotte Eagles.

"I love this a lot," Massie said when asked about coming home. "I was excited to learn that Norfolk might have a team and I knew I wanted to come home and give it a shot. Now that I've made it, I'm so happy to be a part of this community again. I am also happy that my parents will be able to see me play again. I've been playing in Charleston for two seasons and with them at the games in Norfolk it will be just like old times!"
