OMG! What a Goal: Vancouver's Davide Chiumiento conjures instinctive, swiveling strike
12 Sep, 2011They call him the "Swiss Ronaldinho," and though his Vancouver Whitecaps remain stuck in last place in their debut season in Major League Soccer, Davide Chiumiento gave fans something to savor in a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls in Harrison, N.J. on Saturday.
After a slashing endline run by Brazilian teammate Camilo, Chiumento received the ball deep inside the New York penalty box, but facing the wrong way and with two defenders close at hand.
A Switzerland international of Italian heritage, the stocky playmaker solved both those problems by touching the ball into the air with his left foot to set up a whirling volley with his preferred right, skinning the underside of the crossbar and bulging the roof of the net with a finish that gave Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul no chance.
Presently led by interim coach and former D.C. United boss Tom Soehn, the Whitecaps are capable of playing silky-smooth attacking soccer and have now won multiple OMG! honors this year.
