Will D.C. United teenage phenom Andy Najar play for U.S. or Honduras?
4 Aug, 2010ESPN\'s Brent Latham takes a look at the decision D.C. United midfielder Andy Najar will have to eventually make - which country should he represent? Honduran fans are eager for Najar to commit to their national team, but American fans are holding out hope that he will eventually suit up for the red, white and blue.
Najar is not an American citizen and is playing professionally in the United States with a green card. In order to play for the U.S. team, he would have to become a citizen, a process that could take at least five years.
Najar and his agent haven\'t committed him one way or the other. Right now, he has said he is focused on his club duties and is not ready for international soccer. He was reportedly included in a recent list of call-ups for a Honduran under-20 national team camp, but has said he will turn down any international calls to focus on D.C. United. Najar went a step further by refusing to commit his international future to Honduras.
