PSW's Daily World Cup Update: Sunday, June 20, 2010 [VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

20 Jun, 2010

We are now into the second round of matches within the group stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the goal count is going up as the nerves begin to relax. We\'ve seen traditional powers starting to fall (Spain and France). Will we continue to see the underdog prevail?

See below for Day 10 results and recaps (including video highlights), a preview of Day 11, news from around the tournament, group standings, World Cup viewing parties in the metro DC area, and a TV schedule for the upcoming week.

Be sure to check out our latest column, \'Soccer, the American Way\' by PSW\'s Joe Dougherty about how soccer and the World Cup is perceived in the U.S.

[+ Day 1]  [+ Day 2]  [+ Day 3] [+ Day 4] [+ Day 5] [+ Day 6] [+ Day 7] [+ Day 8] [+ Day 9]
Day 10 Results and Recaps:
Slovakia  0:2  Paraguay - Paraguay is looking to make a strong run after tying defending champions Italy and soundly defeating Slovakia. The team has proven it has a dangerous offense and they\'re getting very close to the next round with four points already. Enrique Vera scored in the 27th on a one-touch shot in the box, and Cristian Riveros put the game away in the 86th minute with a left-footed shot from the edge of the box. Paraguay is in great shape, but it looks like this could be the end of the road for Slovakia. [+ VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

Italy  1:1  New Zealand - Italy continues to struggle, picking up its second tie so far. In a shocking performance, New Zealand took the early lead in the 7th minute of the game. Captain Fabio Cannavaro made a horrible error (not even his first glaring error that led to a goal this World Cup), letting a long free kick deflect off his hip to a waiting Shane Smeltz who just had to tap it in. Italy put the pressure on and Vincenzo Iaquinta got the equalizer in the 29th with a penalty kick, a result of Tommy Smith pulling Daniele De Rossi down in the box on a corner kick. Though it\'s a tie, I think we can safely say it\'s a huge win for the Kiwis, and a devastating result for the Azzurri. [+ VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

Brazil  3:1  Ivory Coast - Though there wasn\'t a lot of soccer played towards the end, the Brazilians secured their spot in the second round with the win today. Luis Fabiano had two goals (including one that shouldn\'t have been counted after he handled the ball with his hand/arm twice leading up to the shot), and Elano had the third goal. The big story, however, is the physical battles that took place all over the field, both during and after play ended. Brazilian star Kaka being ejected with two yellows late in the game. Didier Drogba took advantage, putting away Ivory Coast\'s only goal on a header in the 79th minute. [+ VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

Looking Ahead to Day 11:
Will Portugal finally play better against North Korea? Coming off their big upset over Spain, Switzerland will face off against Chile. Spain will look to rebound when they take on Honduras in the late game.

News From Around The Cup:
* The French team is in total disarray as Nicolas Anelka was dismissed by coach Raymond Domenech, the team refused to train in support of Anelka, and the team director Jean-Louis Valentin resigned afer saying he was fed up with the team. Wow.

* An England fan has been arrested and charged with trespassing for allegedly entering the national team\'s locker room following a 0-0 draw with Algeria.

* FIFA told the U.S. Soccer Federation on Sunday that the American team can\'t train at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Tuesday ahead of the game against Algeria the following day to protect the playing surface.

* The Nigerian team has asked its government to provide security for midfielder Sani Kaita after his red card during a World Cup loss to Greece prompted more than 1,000 death threats.
