PSW's Daily World Cup Update: Monday, June 21, 2010 [VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

21 Jun, 2010

Today we finish up the second round of matches within the group stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Almost every group remains tight, with the last week of the group stage set to determine who will advance and who will head home early.

See below for Day 11 results and recaps (including video highlights), a preview of Day 12, news from around the tournament, group standings, World Cup viewing parties in the metro DC area, and a TV schedule for the upcoming week.

Be sure to check out our latest column, \'Soccer, the American Way\' by PSW\'s Joe Dougherty about how soccer and the World Cup is perceived in the U.S.

Day 11 Results and Recaps:
Portugal  7:0  North Korea - Seriously, North Korea? I thought you were well organized and an underdog who might surprise some teams after only losing to Brazil 2-1 and making them work for their win. Instead, you completely fell apart and let Portugal (who couldn\'t score a goal in their first match) walk all over you in the most embarassing game so far (Australia falling to Germany comes in second). Cristiano Ronaldo finally ended his scoring drought (with a ridiculous play where the ball was on his head and back without him knowing where it was before he put it past the keeper), and the Portuguese cruised to a huge shutout that should put them and Brazil through to the next round. With so many goals, you have to check out this highlight reel:

Chile  1:0  Switzerland
- Despite a red card for Valon Behrami in the 31st minute (straight red for rough play), Switzerland looked like it was going to continue being the inpenetrable defense of the tournament. Chile\'s Alexis Sanchez scored a goal in the 49th, only to have it disallowed as offside (it was). The Swiss finally conceded a goal when substitute Mark Gonzalez scored off of a header in the 75th minute to give Chile the 1-0 win. Switzerland had a wide open chance in front of goal in the last minutes of play, but pushed it just wide of the goal. Chile looks to be in a great position to move through to the second round, and the pressure is all on Spain now.

Spain  2:0  Honduras - Now that\'s more like it. Spain rebounded from its shocking loss to Switzerland with a shutout against a weak Honduras side. David Villa had both goals (and should have had several more, including a missed penalty kick) to lead the Spanish to its first points of the tournament. His first goal, in the 17th minute, was an incredible individual effort that quickly put the Spanish at ease. Spain can still win the group with a win in their final group stage match against Chile.

Looking Ahead to Day 12:
No more 7:30am games! We move to a new scheduling format as Groups A and B will finish off their group stage games. In Group A, it\'s France vs South Africa and Mexico vs Uruguay. Will France even show up for the game after all of the weekend drama? The two top spots are still up for grabs. In the late time slot, Group B finishes off with Greece vs Argentina and Nigeria vs South Korea. Though Nigeria is done, the other three teams all have a chance to advance.

News From Around The Cup:
* There are rumors that four North Korean players have defected after they were marked "absent" on an official FIFA teamsheet. However, North Korea is denying they are missing and says it was a clerical error.

* Italy coach Marcello Lippi said his team didn\'t follow orders in their disappointing 1-1 draw with New Zealand.

* No surprise after their seven goal performance, Portugal says they love the much maligned Jabulani ball.

* The French team is in total disarray as Nicolas Anelka was dismissed by coach Raymond Domenech, the team refused to train in support of Anelka, and the team director Jean-Louis Valentin resigned afer saying he was fed up with the team. Wow.

* An England fan has been arrested and charged with trespassing for allegedly entering the national team\'s locker room following a 0-0 draw with Algeria.

* FIFA told the U.S. Soccer Federation on Sunday that the American team can\'t train at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Tuesday ahead of the game against Algeria the following day to protect the playing surface.

* The Nigerian team has asked its government to provide security for midfielder Sani Kaita after his red card during a World Cup loss to Greece prompted more than 1,000 death threats.
