PSW's Daily World Cup Update: Wednesday, June 16, 2010 [VIDEO]

16 Jun, 2010

The 2010 FIFA World Cup continues with the first matches of Group H and Group A continuing into its second games. Wil we continue to see a lack of goals? Should we blame the Jabulani ball, the vuvuzelas, or just conservative play early on? See below for Day 6 results and recaps (including video highlights), a preview of Day 7, news from around the tournament, group standings, World Cup viewing parties in the metro DC area, and a TV schedule for the upcoming week.

Be sure to check out our latest column, \'Soccer, the American Way\' by PSW\'s Joe Dougherty about how soccer and the World Cup is perceived in the U.S.

Today is also Youth Day in South Africa, a day to remember the Soweto uprising in 1976 between black youths and South African authorities during Apartheid.

[+ Day 1]  [+ Day 2]  [+ Day 3] [+ Day 4] [+ Day 5]
Day 4 Results and Recaps:
Chile  1:0  Honduras - There was no Jonathan Bornstein to save Honduras today, as Chile won their first World Cup match in 48 years. Chile was clearly the more aggressive team and saw most of the chances on goal throughout the game. Jean Beausejour converted off of a Mauricio Isla cross in the 34th minute to notch the only tally of the match. Chile takes the early lead in Group H.  [+ VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

Spain  0:1  Switzerland - In the most shocking game of the tournament so far, Switzerland beat tournament favorites Spain for the first time ever. Spain dominated possession and shots and goal, and in the first half, Switzerland hardly crossed the midfield line. The Swiss sat in and played for the counterattack, and finally broke through in the 52nd minute when Gelson Fernandes scored a scrappy goal during chaos in Spain\'s box. The Spanish continued their dominance on the ball for most of the game, getting numerous chances - including a rocket off the crossbar - but failing to convert on any of them. [+ VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

South Africa  0:3  Uruguay - The host nation was crushed by Uruguay 3-0, making it likely that they will exit in the group stage (a first for a host country). Uruguay\'s Diego Forlan had the brace, scoring his first goal on a long-range deflected shot in the 24th minute. He also converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute. South African goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was ejected in the 76th minute, making it even more difficult for Bafana Bafana to mount a comeback. Álvaro Pereira secured the win and valuable three points in the 90th minute of the game. [+ VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

Looking Ahead to Day 7:
Argentina and South Korea, both at the top of Group B, will face off in the early game. Both teams looked strong in their opening matches, so will tournament favorite Argentina be able to lock up a spot in the next round? Greece and Nigeria, both with losses in their first matches, battle in the second match of the day. France will look to improve its form against Mexico; both teams tied in their first Group A matches.

News From Around The Cup:
* Slovenia\'s Andrej Komac has guaranteed victory against the U.S. Here is Tim Howard\'s response.

* English midfielder Gareth Barry will return from injury for their match against Algeria on Friday.

* Australia asked FIFA for leniency over Tim Cahill\'s red card against Germany in a bid to have him back against Serbia for its third group game.

* About 600 World Cup security workers and supporters marched on city hall Wednesday in a labor dispute that has spread to half the tournament\'s stadiums.

* The USA v England match was the most viewed World Cup first round match and fifth most-viewed World Cup match ever.

* Despite a lot of criticism from TV viewers and players, FIFA president Sepp Blatter is defending South African fans\' right to blow their vuvuzela horns during World Cup matches.

* Former French captain Zinedine Zidane criticized the French team coach Raymond Domenech and said there was no teamwork among the French players at the World Cup.
