PSW's Daily World Cup Update: Sunday, June 13, 2010

13 Jun, 2010

The 2010 FIFA World Cup continues today with three matches from Group C and D. See below for results and recaps (including video highlights), a preview of Day 4, news from around the tournament, group standings, World Cup viewing parties in the metro DC area, and a TV schedule for the upcoming week.

Be sure to check out our latest column, \'Soccer, the American Way\' by PSW\'s Joe Dougherty about how soccer and the World Cup is perceived in the U.S.

[+ Day 1]  [+ Day 2]
Day 3 Results and Recaps:
Slovenia  1:0  Algeria - Surely the US and England were watching closely this morning to scout out their upcoming games. They must have been pleased early as the game looked to be heading to a 0-0 draw. However, Slovenia captain Robert Koren scored a late goal to give them the early lead in the Group C. Algeria looked to be the stronger side throughout the game, even when substitute Abdelkader Ghezzal was sent off in the 72nd minute after picking up two yellow cards. Algeria now sits in last place in the group, and it was a result of yet another goalkeeping blunder. Algerian\'s Fawzi Chaouchi misjudged a long-range shot and it bounced off his arm and into the back of the net. With two huge GK mistakes already this tournament, could it be the result of the much-hated (at least by goalkeepers) Jabulani ball? [ + VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS ]

Serbia  0:1  Ghana - Ghana becomes the first African nation to win a World Cup game on African soil as they upset Serbia in Group D. It seemed to be a game of missed opportunities, and nobody could convert until a PK in the 84th minute of the game. Serbian defender Lukovic got sent off with a red card (as a result of two yellow cards) in the 73rd minute. Going down a player seemed to reinvigorate the Serbian side, as they got some of their best chances of the game shortly after. However, Ghana responded, and Serbian defender Zdravko Kuzmanovic cleared a cross with an obvious handball in the box, and Ghana was rewarded with the first penalty kick of the tournament. Asamoah Gyan hammered it home to give them three points. [ + VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS ]

Germany  4:0  Australia - Germany routed Australia 4-0 after showing some unexpected creativity and beautiful goals from a typically methodical and effective team. Tim Cahill was sent off with a straight red card (and will now miss Australia\'s next two games), which made a comeback seem even more impossible. Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose scored in the first half, while Thomas Mueller and Cacau added tallies in the second half. Germany has now scored more goals in one game than any other team in the tournament thus far. Can they go all the way without injured captain Michael Ballack? It looks like they\'ll be making yet another run for the Cup. [ + VIDEO ]

Looking Ahead to Day 4:
Group E and F will see their first games of the tournament. The Netherlands and Denmark will face off in the early match, with Japan and Cameroon battling in the second Group E match of the day. The late game belongs to defending champions Italy as they take on Paraguay. All games will air live on ESPN.

News From Around The Cup:
* The Netherlands will have to open the World Cup without the services of Arjen Robben, who has officially been ruled out due to his hamstring injury.

* FIFA is investigating why a section of seats at Soccer City was unoccupied during the World Cup opening match between South Africa and Mexico.

* Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba had surgery on his broken elbow and returned to training and may be available for their opener against Portugal on Tuesday, June 15.

* Former South African president Nelson Mandela will not attend the opening game after his 13-year-old great granddaughter Zenani Mandela was killed in a one-car accident after attending the World Cup kickoff concert at the Orlando Stadium.

* Check out photos from the opening ceremonies and concert.
