PSW's Daily World Cup Update: Saturday, June 12, 2010 [VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]
12 Jun, 2010The 2010 FIFA World Cup continued today with three matches from Group B and C. See below for results and recaps (including video highlights), a preview of Day 3, news from around the tournament, group standings, World Cup viewing parties in the metro DC area, and a TV schedule for the upcoming week.
Be sure to check out our latest column, \'Soccer, the American Way\' by PSW\'s Joe Dougherty about how soccer and the World Cup is perceived in the U.S.
Day 2 Results and Recaps:
South Korea 2:0 Greece The day kicked off with South Korea dominating an overmatched Greek side in Group B action. Lee Jung-Soo and Park Ji-Sung each scored to give the South Koreans the most goals scored by one team in a tournament game so far. Greece\'s lackluster performance made it look like they\'re heading for an early exit. [ + VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS ]
Argentina 1:0 Nigeria Though they had many chances they weren\'t able to capitalize on, the Argentinians looked solid in Diego Maradona\'s first World Cup victory as a coach.Gabriel Heinze scored on a diving header early in the game, and it was all they would need to take away three points in their first game of Group B. Messi looked like the Messi of Barcelona form, and it looks like Nigeria will have to keep relying on their unbelievable goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to gain any points in the group.
England 1:1 USA The Yanks surprised the Brits by coming back and leveling the score to earn the draw. The U.S. looked asleep (especially the backline) for the first few minutes, and captain Steven Gerrard took advantage in the fourth minute with a short range shot. The U.S. found their chances and GK Tim Howard kept them in the game with some spectacular saves (even after taking a nasty kick to the chest). The Yanks had a little luck when Clint Dempsey tied it up in the 40th minute after a major blunder by England GK Robert Green. Dempsey\'s long-range shot looked routine for the keeper, but he fumbled the ball when it hit his hands and gave up a goal that Brits will surely not forget for a long time. A good outcome for the underdog Americans, the teams each pick up a point in Group C.
Looking Ahead to Day 3:
Group C action continues as Algeria and Slovenia battle each other in the early game of the day. Group D\'s Serbia and Ghana face each other at 10am, and the day rounds out with what is arguably the most interesting match of the day in Germany vs Australia (Group D). Expectations for the German team have not been lowered despite some key injuries, including captain Michael Ballack.
News From Around The Cup:
* The Netherlands will have to open the World Cup without the services of Arjen Robben, who has officially been ruled out due to his hamstring injury.
* FIFA is investigating why a section of seats at Soccer City was unoccupied during the World Cup opening match between South Africa and Mexico.
* Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba had surgery on his broken elbow and returned to training and may be available for their opener against Portugal on Tuesday, June 15.
* Former South African president Nelson Mandela will not attend the opening game after his 13-year-old great granddaughter Zenani Mandela was killed in a one-car accident after attending the World Cup kickoff concert at the Orlando Stadium.
* Check out photos from the opening ceremonies and concert.
