PSW's Daily World Cup Update: Friday, June 11, 2010
11 Jun, 2010The 2010 FIFA World Cup kicked off today with host nation South Africa battling Mexico and fellow Group A teams Uruguay and France playing the late game. See below for results and recaps, a preview of Day 2, news from around the tournament, World Cup viewing parties in the metro DC area, group standings, and a TV schedule for the upcoming week.
Day 1 Results and Recaps:
Mexico 1:1 South Africa - Despite being dominated in the first half, Bafana Bafana held on to keep the score tied 0-0 at halftime. South Africa gained their composure in the second half and scored the tournament\'s first goal, a gorgeous left-footed strike from Siphiwe Tshabalala. Mexico rallied and devastated the home crowd with a late equalizer from Rafael Marquez. Marquez collected a cross to the far post, where he was left unmarked. Katlego Mphela almost had the game winner in the 90th minute when he got clear of two defenders, but his shot hit the post. [ + VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS ]
France 0:0 Uruguay A strong defensive outing from Uruguay frustrated a French side that could not find the back of the net. After their poor form during qualifiers, Les Bleus did not show that they\'ve changed their ways with the beginning of the tournament. We also saw our first red card of the tournament when Nicolas Lodeiro went in for a terrible tackle and received his second yellow card of the game (he received his first yellow for kicking the ball away). This is surely a result that Uruguay will be pleased with, and it keeps everyone in Group A tied with 1 point.
Day 2 Preview:
All eyes in this country will be on Rustenburg, South Africa as the U.S. takes on England at 2:30pm EST (ABC) on Saturday in Group C action. The earlier matches on Saturday will see Group B\'s South Korea vs Greece (7:30am on ESPN) and Lionel Messi begins his tournament as Argentina takes on Nigeria (10:00am on ESPN).
