Six Aegean Hawks amateurs selected to USASA National Select Team
27 Aug, 2009United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) Men’s National Select Team Coach Aleks Mihailovic has named six members of Virginia\'s Aegean Hawks Football Club to the roster for the National Select Team’s upcoming exhibitions against the Republic of Ireland’s Amateur National Select Team in San Francisco.
This event will mark the second time USASA and Ireland meet on the field. In 2007, the USASA Men’s National Select Team successfully played a two-game series against the Ireland National Amateur Team in Ireland with games in Cork followed by a second game in Tipperary Town. The USASA National Select Team was dominant in both games beating Ireland 1-0 and 2-0, respectively. It was a pleasant outcome for USASA as they played against a well-respected team that has been very successful in European international competition over the last several years.
The upcoming international match will be played at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco on September 26th. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The game will be available through an audio webcast (http://tinyurl.com/USASAvsIreland) so that fans around the world can be part of the experience.
Hawks midfielders Michael Goldman (George Washington) and Watson Vaughan-Prather (Wisconsin) were selected along with forward Ricky Schramm (Georgetown) and defenders Edward Thurston (Brown), Ricardo Valverde (Virginia Commonwealth) and Clayton Voss (William & Mary).
Goldman is the only member of the quintet to have represented the U.S. at the international level as he was a starter on the Maccabi U.S. Men’s Open Teams that competed in the 2005 and 2006 Maccabi International Games.
“USASA not only gives its Elite Amateur Players exposure with this type of competitions but the opportunity to compete at a high level against international teams,” said USASA Region IV Director Bill Bosgraaf. “Players may be able to use the experience to advance to a higher level of competition such as the professional level.”
The Irish team will arrive in San Francisco on September 20th and conduct daily training sessions in the Bay Area. Aleks Mihailovic, USASA Men’s National Select Team Head Coach, and his staff will start their preparations by bringing their players in on September 19th. Unlike a National Team, these players will come together for the first time from their (various) State Association’s clubs within the USASA and Coach Mihailovic will have limited time to form their team to challenge one of the best National Amateur Teams in all of Europe.
The Aegean Hawks won the 2009 USASA National Amateur Cup by defeating the AAC Eagles (IL), 2-1, in hot and humid conditions at Sylan Lake Park in Orlando, Florida on July 26th. The Hawks have won three consecutive State Cup titles and represented Region I as a finalist in the national tournament on two occasions since 2007.
