United win right to host Open Cup play-in at RFK May 20th

2 May, 2009

D.C. United won the coin-toss that determined which team gets to host the final play-in match in U.S. Open Cup play. United will now host the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, May 20 at RFK Stadium. The game will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. ET and serve as Special Game B for half and full season ticket holders. Tickets for the general public will go on sale next week.

The winner of this match up will qualify for the round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup. D.C. defeated FC Dallas in its first play-in game 2-0 on April 22, while New York defeated San Jose 2-1 on April 28 to reach this point.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual national competition that is open to all amateur and professional soccer teams that are affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest tournament in the U.S., beginning in 1914 when Brooklyn Field Club took home the very first title. MLS teams were first included in the tournament in the inaugural 1996 season, with D.C. taking home the title that season. Last year, United won its second Open Cup championship, defeating the Charleston Battery 2-1 in the final.
