Falcone, Assaro honored by US Adult Soccer Association
3 Nov, 2008In front of a standing audience in the Alamo Ballroom of the Marriott San Antonio Riverwalk Tony Falcone, along with other four individuals, was inducted into the USASA Hall of Fame, Class of 2008. Mr. Falcone is the President of the Maryland State Soccer Association and the U.S. Adult Soccer Association’s (USASA) Region I Treasurer. Frank Assaro, Founder and Head Coach of the Baltimore Colts Soccer Club, was also honored as the recipient of the 2007 USASA Coach of the Year Award.
“We are pleased to finally welcome the Class of 2008 into the USASA Hall of Fame, although neither our words nor the awards presented can adequately recognize their devotion to the game we all love,” said Hall of Fame Committee Chairman Bruno Trapikas of this year’s selections.
Tony has served the Maryland State Soccer Association (MSSA) for more than twenty years as League Commissioner, Delegate-at-Large and President from 1988 to 1995. During that time, Mr. Falcone became a member of the USASA Rules Committee.
In 1992, Tony took an officer’s commission with the U.S. Army and was relocated to Brooklyn, New York. Despite being several states away, he was asked to continue as President. Unfortunately, he had to resign in 1995, as the Army sent him overseas. Tony took over the MSSA as President again in 1998 and has performed in that capacity since. Along with his presidential duties, he has worked as Maryland’s Cup Commissioner, organized the Champions Cup, and established the MSSA web site and online registration.
Hall of Fame Honorees are chosen on the basis of having made a significant contribution toward the development and advancement of adult amateur soccer at the national or regional level. The award is bestowed annually to five individuals at the USASA’s Midyear Meeting, a four-day soccer convention.
Every year, the USASA pays tribute to the regional Coach of the Year through an Awards Luncheon that also takes place at the Midyear Meeting. Frank Assaro was presented the USASA Coach of the Year Award on Saturday, October 11.
Mr. Assaro currently serves as the Trainer, Coach and Board Member for the Baltimore Bays Soccer Club. He is also founder and current Commissioner of the Champions Soccer League and the F. Patrick Healey Cup. Frank is presently the Head Coach of the Baltimore Colts, the 2008 USASA Men’s National Amateur Cup Runners-up.
The Coach of the Year Program was initiated to recognize dedicated and successful coaches throughout the United States in both Men’s and Women’s programs at the state, regional and national levels. This recognition was seen as a way to not only honor the award recipients, but also promote their qualities throughout all levels of Adult Soccer, so that other coaches may emulate these qualities.
