Bier FC re-named to United SC Over 30, re-organizes in hope of National Championship
25 Jul, 2008After more than 10 years, one of the best men’s over-30 club teams in the country has retired their name and re-organized in hopes of finally breaking through to win a National Championship.
Bier was started by a group of guys who were through with competitive soccer and just wanted to play for fun and drink some beers – and did that. Then something crazy and very unexpected happened, the team became very competitive on the field. In 2002 the squad with many former Division 1 college players and even some former professionals made their first run at the O-30 Virginia state title and found themselves on the short side of an overtime loss in the O-30 National Semifinals. A new era had begun.
Since then, Bier has had amazing history on and off the field, including league titles in Northern Virginia Soccer League, Washington International Soccer League, and the Washington Premier League. The tournament titles piled up too, at places like Neptune, Soccer Resort, Bullis, Cape Fear, and Dulles Sportsplex. But the biggest accomplishments have clearly been earning the privilege to represent Region 1 in the United States Adult Soccer Association Nationals for three of the last seven years.
While reaching the final four so many times in such a wide field of teams nation-wide is an enormous accomplishment, the team was never able to break through and win it all. And that is something team Founder Roger Hale intends to change.
In a letter to the team announcing the changes, Hale thanked everyone involved with the team so far, while officially closing the decade-long chapter by saying, “We have created a lifetime of memories and stories that we will talk about for years to come. At all levels this team has succeeded on and off the pitch. Bier’s successes would not have been possible without the sacrifices made by both the players and their significant others. However, the final whistle has blown and the time has come to respectfully retire the Bier FC name.”
The team now turns towards re-organization, and with an eye towards a younger roster. A recruiting drive is under way to find the best of the best players in the region 30 years or older, to find new sponsors, and to make a major push to finally break through and win it all at Nationals.
The new team will play in the NVSL Masters Division this Fall, and plans to train regularly in preparation for the 2009 national tournament. Interested players are invited to contact the team.
