Baltimore Colts earn berth to National Amateur Final Four
22 Jun, 2008By: George Murphy
The Baltimore Colts FC of the Maryland Major Premier League team defeated the New York Greek Americans, 3-2 on Sunday to gain a berth to the Amateur division of the National Final Four to be held in Seattle, WA on Aug 7-10th..
The Colts opened the scoring at the 20 min mark when forward Bill Whittington made a pass to the flank to midfielder Mike Lotocki who finished a shot from eighteen yards out.
The Colts were able to make it 2-0 when Whittington took a pass from Jon Ports who beat the keeper by slotting it to the corner.
Just before the half ended, New York played a long ball down the left flank and behind the defense, the player dribbled to the end line, cut the ball back and found a teammate in the box who finished and made it 2-1.
But the Colts all but secured the win after Ports put the Colts up 3-1 with another goal.
On their way to the Regional Title, the Colts captured the Maryland State Crown by moving through a single game elimination tournament within the State. They then move onto other State Champions and defeated New Jersey 2-1 and Pennsylvania 6-0.
The Baltimore Colts compete in the Maryland Major Soccer League Premier Division. Player/Coach Frank Assaro has run the club since it's inception in 1993. Colin Devlin has been the team's manager since 2005.
Assaro was very happy with his team’s performance. "We have a very solid group of players” he said after the game. “We’re very happy with this result and all of the guys are happy to be going to Seattle. We'll challenge ourselves to insure we give our best performance.”
The Colts have collected numerous league and State Cup titles and have reached the Regional Championship match 5 times, along with three Regional titles and represented Region 1 at the National Final Four.
In 2005, the Baltimore Colts FC captured the USASA National Open Cup by defeating Texas in the semi final and Illinois in the Final. The National Championship title was Maryland's first outright since 1914. (In 1940, Maryland were Co-Champs with, ironically, Illinois).
Current roster includes: Kevin Wise, Timmy Lane, Rob Layton, Robbie Carper, Steve Fell, Ed McCue, Xavier Rock, Jon Ports, Adam Hack, Mike Lotocki, Billy Whittington, Andre Wise, Steve Bottcher, Guil Costa, Greg Wellinghoff, Ade Elliott, Jeff Grosser, Frank Assaro.
