Aegean Hawks down Sport Club Portuguese of NJ 1-0 in Open Cup

28 Apr, 2008

The Arlington Virginia based men’s amateur team Aegean Hawks kicked off defense of their 2007 Region I USASA Open Cup title with an away 1-0 win against perennial Champions League (NJ) front-runners, Sport Club Portuguese of Newark, NJ.

Sport Club Portuguese has won the NY-NJ Champions league for the last 4 years and have a rich and storied history in American soccer. However, despite driving to New York City that same morning, the Hawks held firm through a scoreless first half, and made tactical adjustments at half time that paid off with a 60th minute goal by substitute Anders Kelto on his first touch of the match. The goal stood, setting up a Region I Quarterfinal with powerhouse Baltimore Colts FC on May 4th that will decide the best team in the Washington DC region and the team that will advance to the Region I semifinals. The winner of the semifinals will qualify as one of two Region I entrants by USASA into the 2008 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup national stage.
