MLS teams enter U.S. Open Cup knock-out rounds this week, United face Richmond Wednesday

28 Jun, 2010

The third round of the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup kicks into action Tuesday night, June 29, as six Major League Soccer clubs enter the competition to face winners from the tournament’s second round. The third round concludes on Wednesday, June 30, when 2009 champion Seattle Sounders FC travels to Portland to face the Timbers while 2009 runner-up DC United hosts the Richmond Kickers. Three United Soccer Leagues Second Division teams, five USSF D-2 Pro League sides and eight Major League Soccer clubs comprise the remaining squads in the 97th edition of the tournament.

The winners of this week’s games advance to the quarterfinals, to be held July 6-7. The semifinals are set for Aug. 31-Sept. 1, and the final will be played Oct. 5.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which is recognized as U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 95 consecutive years dating back to 1914. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
