Four local players join U14 NDP Boys team in Orlando, Fla., for Interregional event
12 Nov, 2009Coinciding with the 2009 U.S. Youth Soccer ODP Interregional in Orlando, Fla., U-14 Boy’s NDP head coach Manny Schellscheidt will bring 36 players to Disney World to compete against some of the best regional teams in the country.
The players traveling to Disney World from Nov. 25-30 were all born in 1996, and represent the first group of ‘96s to enter the U.S. youth national team system. The players will be split into two teams, Navy and Red, to compete in three games at the Disney event. On Monday, Nov. 30, the two national teams will face each other before departing in the afternoon.
In August of 1997, U.S. Soccer started the U.S. Under-14 National Development Program, knowing that to continue to compete with the elite countries on the international level, the U.S. would have to build a base of soccer players from the youth level up. The Under-14 program introduces young players to a level of soccer they would not otherwise see at such a young age and allows the country’s top youths the chance to experience soccer at its highest level and in an international setting.
