Northern Virginia Majestics shut out by Charlotte 2-0

28 Jun, 2009

For the fifth game in a row, the Northern Virginia Majestics came up empty, falling 2-0 to the Charlotte Lady Eagles at Hellwig Field Saturday night.  Charlotte forward Danielle dos Santos netted the game-winner just after half-time to earn the victory for the visiting Eagles.

Unlike recent weeks, the Majestics came out firing in the opening half of the match.  The return of Majestic veteran Lisa DuCote into the Northern Virginia midfield, combined with the call-up of Super 20 forward Bailey Wilcox, provided a welcome spark to a previously ineffective offense.  The Majestics registered six shots on the half, but were unable to get past Charlotte keeper Katie Forbis.

Entering the second half still scoreless, it would be the Lady Eagles that showed a focused attack.  Charlotte forward Christy Rife trickled a ball untouched across the Majestics goal mouth in the 48th minute, finding the opportunistic do Santos at the far post for the tap-in goal and 1-0 advantage.

Charlotte doubled their lead ten minutes later, as Lindsey Ozimek converted a penalty kick on an adjudged hand ball infraction by Northern Virginia.

The second goal took most of the life out of the Majestics for the remainder of the match.  Northern Virginia had a couple of near opportunities late, but overall seemed deterred by the two-goal Charlotte lead and succumbed to another loss.

The Majestics have only scored two goals this season and are currently last in the USL W-League in the ‘Goals For’ statistics category.
