D.C. United Academy Update: May 5, 2009

5 May, 2009

It was another busy two-day stretch for the D.C. United Academy over the weekend, as the U16s and U18s took on the PA Classics on Saturday, May 2 and FC Delco on Sunday. Saturday’s results were positive, with two wins against PA Classics but Sunday was a change of fortune as the U16s tied and the U18s came up short against FC Delco.

“We are very happy with the progress our players are making,” said John Maessner, United’s Director of Youth Development. “Both teams created lots of very good chances and played attractive, attacking soccer.”

On Saturday, both teams won their respective games against PA Classics by a 1-0 scoreline. The lone goal for the U16s came from a Myles McGinley penalty kick, while the U18s scored on a free kick by Paul Torres.

The results weren’t as kind on Sunday, as the U16s got off to a flying start, only to concede two late goals to settle for the draw. Yaw Amankwa drew a penalty in the 27th minute and finished it himself to open the scoring, while McGinley scored his second goal in two days to extend the lead against PA Classics. On Sunday, the U18s managed a lone goal through Eliseo Fraga in a 2-1 defeat against FC Delco.
