W&M's Claire Zimmeck, Diana Weigel earn All-American honors from Soccer Buzz

28 Jan, 2009

William and Mary senior Claire Zimmeck (Fairfax, Va.) earned third-team All-America honors from Soccer Buzz Magazine today following an outstanding senior campaign and was one of four Tribe players honored by the website for play last fall.

Freshman Diana Weigel (Fairfax, Va.) also copped national honors, earning second-team Freshman All-America accolades in addition to her spot on the Mid-Atlantic Region All-Rookie team. Zimmeck and classmate Dani Collins (Cream Ridge, N.J.) were each named to the all-region first team, and senior Abby Lauer (Oak Hill, Va.) was tabbed to the regional third-team.

Zimmeck capped her career with her third All-American award from Soccer Buzz. She finished her stellar four-year career with 57 goals and 12 assists, and ranking among the Tribe's all-time top-five in seven career categories, including the most match-winning goals with 25. A three-time All-American and two-time CAA Player of the Year, Zimmeck earned first-team all-conference honors in 2008 after leading W&M to its third-straight regular season title, scoring 15 goals and a career-high six assists. She also earned national plaudits from the NSCAA, and was recently selected in the ninth round of the WPS draft by the Washington Freedom.

Weigel was the Tribe's top-scoring freshman in 2008 and fourth on the team overall, totaling 4 goals and 4 assists, including both goals in a 2-0 triumph over Drexel on October 5. This is her first award past the conference level, after earning all-rookie honors from the CAA.

Collins was named first-team all-region for the second year in a row, and also earned first-team all-region and third-team All-American honors from the NSCAA in December. In 2008, she set career highs with four goals and six assists, and scored the deciding goal in three games. Included in that total was the overtime goal just 35 seconds into the extra period to knock off Hofstra at Albert-Daly Field on October 12.

Lauer earned all-region honors for the second time after recording a career-high nine assists in 2008. She was named the co-Defender of the Year in the CAA in addition to garnering first-team all-conference accolades, and ranks among the Tribe's all-time top-10 players in assists, matches started, and matches played. A third-team Academic All-American selection, the biology major started every match during her four years on campus, and this past season played every minute of every game.
