PSW Regional College Round-up: November 21-November 24 NCAA TOURNAMENT EDITION

NCAA Tournament - Games This Week:

Men\'s Div I:
Following Friday night’s first round of play in the NCAA men’s soccer tournament, the second-seeded Maryland men’s soccer team now knows its first opponent. The Terps will face Colonial Athletic Association Champion George Mason tonight at 7 p.m. under the lights at Ludwig Field in College Park.

By virtue of its 3-1 opening round win over Winthrop, the William and Mary men’s team advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Championship and will meet the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed and defending national champion Wake Forest tonight. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Loyola men\'s soccer team will face UNC Greensboro in their second round NCAA match tonight at 6 p.m. at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. The Spartans upset Duke, 2-0, on Friday night in Durham, N.C. The Greyhounds went undefeated in the regular-season for the first time in 22 seasons (17-0-1), and advanced to the MAAC Tournament Championship before falling to Fairfield, 1-0.

The Virginia men’s team received the No. 10 seed for the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers had a first round bye and begin play in the second round by hosting first-round winner Connecticut on tonight at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers are making their 28th-consecutive NCAA appearance, which is the longest active streak in the nation.

College Boasts

Maryland freshman midfielder Matt Kassel has been tagged TopDrawerSoccer.com Rookie of the Season. Kassel has tallied seven assists in 19 starts for the 18-3-0 Terps in addition to notching the game-winning goal against Binghamton Sept. 30.

George Mason freshman midfielder Eber Martinez (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field High School) was named to the College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in the Patriots’ opening round NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship victory over Penn on Friday evening at George Mason Stadium.

Junior Loyola forward Jamie Darvill has been named to the third-team Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Year. Darvill leads a Loyola offense that ranks second in the nation with 2.4 goals-a-game. One of the top strikers in the college game, Darvill has started all 20 games for Loyola, leading the Greyhounds to a 18-1-1 record.

William and Mary junior Andrew Hoxie was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week after leading the Tribe to a 3-1 NCAA Championship First Round victory over Winthrop. The Newport News, Va., native is the first Tribe player to earn the weekly honor from the Web site since 2004.

Liberty freshman midfielder Karol Chorak has been selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com All-Rookie second team. Chorak was the only Big South player to be placed on the team. The midfielder was selected to the 2008 Big South All-Freshman team this season. The first-year player helped the Flames post a 10-5-3 mark on the year, their second consecutive 10-win season.

Former Potomac Falls High School soccer standout Matt Swaney was one of four Hampden-Sydney players selected to the 2008 ODAC all-conference team, with the sophomore Swaney selected as a first-team defender. Senior midfielder Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) was also named to the All-ODAC Sportsmanship Team.

Christopher Newport men’s soccer player Bryan Davis was named the State Farm Student-Athlete of the Week. The senior defender from Barhamsville, VA scored the eventual game-winner on a shot from almost 40 yards out in the Captains 2-0 win over No. 4 Emory in the NCAA Sweet 16.
