Springfield's Brian Carroll wins second MLS Cup, this time with Columbus
24 Nov, 2008By Joe Dougherty, PSW Staff Writer
Brian Carroll, who played in the Springfield Youth Club travel program and at West Springfield High School, earned his second Major League Soccer title on Sunday as he helped lead the Columbus Crew to a 3-1 win over New York Red Bulls.
The former D.C. United mainstay played a crucial role for Columbus this season, anchoring the middle of the pitch as defensive midfielder ˆ the same role he played successfully for United. In 2004, Carroll helped guide United to the MLS title.
A Parade All-American as a junior and senior at West Springfield, he led the Spartans to the state championship his senior year. As a club player, he guided the Springfield Lions to three state cup titles and four runner-up finishes, and led the Phoenix to the U19 cup final.
He graduated from Wake Forest University in 2002, and was by D.C. United in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft in January 2003. He also has played for the U18, U23 and senior National Teams.
Two other Carrolls - Jeff and Patrick - play for D.C. United. Both are products of Springfield Youth Club.
