GW's Yoni Berhanu tabbed A-10 men’s soccer Rookie of the Year

George Washington men’s soccer freshman Yoni Berhanu (Potomac, MD/Sidwell Friends) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and junior Andy Stadler (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa West) was chosen to the All-Conference First Team in voting conducted by the league’s head coaches and released Wednesday.  Junior midfielder Erick Perez-Segnini (Montgomery Village, MD/Watkins Mill) also earned a spot as All-Conference honorable mention.
 
Berhanu becomes the seventh GW freshman to receive the league’s Rookie of the Year award, first since Arnar Johannsson in 2001.  The elusive forward, who also became the program’s ninth All-Rookie Team selection, finished third on the team in goals (4) and points (11), including the game-winning golden goal against Duquesne Nov. 7.  Berhanu opened his collegiate career with All-Tournament Team honors in helping the Colonials capture their second straight DC College Cup title in August.
 
Berhanu’s selection backs up his preseason billing on the A-10 All-Rookie Team and as one of College Soccer News’ “100 Freshmen to Keep an Eye On in 2008.”
 
Stadler, who finished second in the A-10 with 14 goals and 31 points, is the 21st GW player to receive All-Conference First Team recognition following the eighth-best scoring season in the 44-year program’s history.
 
Stadler led the A-10 and finished the regular season tied for fourth in the nation with 0.88 goals per game and seventh with 1.94 points per game in 16 matches played.  The two-time A-10 Player of the Week and DC College Cup MVP also paced the league with six game-winning goals.
 
It marks the third consecutive season Stadler has earned a postseason conference award after being named to the All-Rookie Team in 2006 and All-Conference Second Team last fall.
 
Perez-Segnini totaled 10 points over GW’s final seven matches to finish second on the team with five goals and 12 points.  The 2007 DC College Cup MVP tied for fourth in the league with four goals and tied for seventh with 10 points in league play.
 
GW is slated to return 25 players from this year’s 2008 team that finished 8-6-3 overall and above .500 for the second straight season.  The Colonials tied for sixth in the A-10 standings with 14 points (4-3-2), but missed out on the conference tournament by a one-point tiebreaker.
