Five second-half goals sends George Mason men to CAA semifinal match

No. 3 George Mason (11-6-2, 6-4-1 CAA) scored five second-half goals to put away the sixth-seeded Hofstra Pride (6-9-4, 5-3-3 CAA) by a final score of 5-0 in a CAA Championship quarterfinal match on Tuesday evening at George Mason Stadium. The five goals sets a school record for goals scored in a CAA Championship match.

Neither George Mason nor Hofstra scored in a first half that featured 11 shots and four corner kicks between the two sides. After nearly 10 minutes ticked off the clock in the second half, the Patriots broke the scoring drought when senior forward Lucas Pardew floated a well-placed ball over the Hofstra defense from about 20 yards out. The ball curved inside the upper-left corner of the net for Pardew’s fourth goal of the season to give Mason a 1-0 lead. Senior Jonathan Borrajo was credited with an assist on the goal.

A little less than 10 minutes after Pardew’s score, two-time CAA Player of the Week Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe added to the Patriots’ lead, streaking up the field and beating Hofstra freshman goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone with a header in the box for his team-leading sixth goal of the season to give Mason a two-goal advantage. Sophomore Irvin Martinez and senior Hugh Fike both earned assists on the score.

After Adjeman-Pamboe’s goal, Mason tacked on another in the 72nd minute when freshman midfielder Ryan Gracia scored his fifth goal of the season after receiving a pass from Adjeman-Pamboe in the open field to put Mason up 3-0. The assist was Adjeman-Pamboe’s team-leading sixth of the year.

In the 82nd minute, the Patriots added to their already commanding lead after sophomore midfielder Anthony Han took a pass from sophomore forward Parker Walton and knocked the ball past a diving Cumpstone and into the left side of the net to give Mason a 4-0 advantage. Walton closed the scoring spurt with a goal in the 85th minute, his fourth of the season. The five goals for Mason were scored in a span of 30:10 in the second half.

While the offense clicked in the victory with a season-high five goals scored, George Mason’s defense also excelled in the match, holding its opponent scoreless for the fourth time in the past five contests. Junior goalkeeper Sean Kelley posted his eighth shutout of the season with six saves in 90 minutes of action.

Tonight’s match was the first appearance in the CAA Championship for both teams since the two sides met for the conference title during the 2006 season. That match ended in a 1-1 double-overtime tie. The Patriots finished as the conference runner-up that season after the Pride won the penalty kick shootout 3-2.
