Virginia's Tchani named ACC Freshman of the Year
11 Nov, 2008Virginia midfielder Tony Tchani (Bafang, Cameroon) earned ACC Freshman of the Year and All-ACC second team honors, while Shawn Barry and Brian Ownby were named to the All-ACC freshmen team, the conference announced Tuesday.
Tchani leads the Cavaliers in goals (nine), despite playing in just 13 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury on Oct. 21 vs. Longwood. Tchani ranks in the top 10 in the league in goals and points (21), as he has also tallied three assists in 2008.
Ownby, who has made 10 starts in 15 appearances, has notched three goals and added three assists in his rookie campaign. The Glen Allen, Va., native has totaled nine points on the year.
Barry, meanwhile, has anchored a Cavalier defense that has posted five shutouts in 2008. The Miramar, Fla., native has appeared in all 17 of UVa’s games, starting 14.
