Maryland State Trooper, soccer coach and dad dies while attending CASL tournament

10 Nov, 2008

Over this past weekend, Trooper Tobin Triebel was killed after being struck by a tree-trimming truck while out for a jog during his visit to North Carolina for the CASL Raleigh Shootout soccer tournament.

Triebel was the assistant coach for the LUYAA SC Red Devils U13 girls team from 2002 through Spring 2008, and was attending the tournament as a fan of his daughter\'s new team, the Thunder Magic U14 girls.  Triebel\'s eldest daughter had played for FC Frederick and is currently with LUYAA SC 89 U19.

Tobin was born Aug. 4, 1969, in Alamogordo, N.M. Tobin\'s family moved to Lexington Park in 1977 and he graduated from Great Mills High School in 1987. He then attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) where he majored in emergency health services (EHS) and received his bachelor\'s degree in EHS and became Nationally Registered as an EMT-Paramedic.

While at UMBC, he met the love of his life -- Susan (Sue) Shryock. They were married and have two beautiful daughters, Hannah (age 16) and Erika (age 13). They moved to New Market in 1994 where they have lived ever since.

Tobin Triebel was a first sergeant with the Maryland State Police and served the department and the citizens of the state with distinction during the past 13 years and four months; the length of his career with MSP.

First Sgt. Triebel was appointed to the 106th Trooper Candidate Police Academy Class in July 1995 and proved to be an exceptional trooper, graduating in the top of his class. He was initially assigned to the Golden Ring Barrack as a road trooper, and in 1996 was selected to join the Aviation Command where he worked as a trooper/flight paramedic.

First Sgt. Triebel was a licensed flight paramedic in the Aviation Command, and at the time of his death was the aviation command training section supervisor. Prior to his current assignment, he served as the western region supervisor overseeing the Frederick and Cumberland Aviation sections, and had also previously been the aviation command\'s Frederick section supervisor (Trooper 3).

Tobin will be remembered as a devoted dad and husband who lived for his family. He was his girls\' number one fan, from coaching Erika\'s soccer team to announcing Hannah\\\'s high school soccer games. He had a passion for rugby and played with the Frederick Rugby Club for 15 years. He was known for being a rugged player that ran the ball fearlessly and tackled hard.

Tobin is survived by his wife, Susan, of 17 years and daughters, Hannah and Erika; mother, Carolyn Triebel; father, Theodore Triebel and step-mother Cara; brothers, Adam and Jacob; sisters, Kristen and Gretchen, brother-in-law Daryl and niece Josephine. Tobin is also survived by grandmother, Dorothy McCaslin of St. Mary\'s County.

His extended family includes father and mother-in-law, Wakeman and Norma Shryock of Hagerstown; brother-in-law, Larry and wife, Pat; sister-in-law, Kelly Redmond and husband, Todd; nieces, Paige, Rachel, Emily, and Leah; nephew, Nathan; and a host of friends that will surely never forget him.

Tobin\'s final loving gift was the gift of life through organ donation.

There will be a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Monocacy Valley Church, 9861 Old National Pike, Ijamsville, MD 21754.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to MFPA Triebel Trust, P.O. Box 547, Cumberland, MD 21501-0547, for his daughters\' education.
