Virginia men fall to No. 1 Wake Forest, 2-0

7 Nov, 2008

Virginia fell to top-ranked Wake Forest, 2-0, Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. Cody Arnoux and Sam Cronin scored for the Demon Deacons.

“We’re not pleased with the result,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “For the first 20 minutes, I thought Wake Forest’s pressure was outstanding, and they scored twice as a result of that pressure. We settled down after that, and I saw some of our younger guys grow up right before our eyes.”

Prior to kick-off, Virginia recognized its senior class. Nino DiMaggio, Michael Giallombardo, David Newman and Matt Poole were honored prior to playing in their last regular-season home game.

Virginia (9-7-1, 4-4 ACC) fell behind in the sixth minute, when Arnoux put a diving header into the back of the net off of a cross by Cronin. For Arnoux, it was his 14th goal of the year.

Later in the second half, the Demon Deacons (17-0-1, 7-0-1) made it 2-0, this time when Cronin gathered a loose ball in Wake Forest’s attacking third and converted a shot from 18 yards out.

The Cavaliers had two good scoring chances in the first half, including a close-range shot by Jonathan Villanueva that barely missed the left side of the goal. Hunter Jumper also nearly put Virginia on the board when he gained possession of a miscleared ball and rocketed a shot from the top of the penalty box. His effort missed just high right.

In the second half, neither team capitalized on its scoring opportunities. Ross LaBauex had two legitimate chances, but both shots were off the mark, and Neil Barlow hit the post in the 89th minute.

Virginia was out-shot 14-9 and held a 8-5 advantage on corner kicks. Giallombardo finished with six saves, while Akira Fitzgerald posted the shutout for the Demon Deacons with one save.
